Pervasive Technology Labs founder and CEO, Michael A. McRobbie
named president of IU
The Trustees of Indiana University on March 1 unanimously approved
the appointment of Michael A. McRobbie as the 18th president of the
187-year-old institution with eight campuses and more than 97,000
students. McRobbie, formerly the interim provost and vice president
for academic affairs at IU Bloomington, has been a senior
administrator at IU for 10 years.
Named IU's first Vice President for Information Technology in 1997,
McRobbie made visionary advances in IT, and built a foundation that
galvanized and focused research into pressing questions across
academe, and notably within the life sciences. McRobbie's vision
has enabled IU's emergence as a research powerhouse, and contributes
to shaping a bright economic future for the state of Indiana. The
beneficiaries of McRobbie's vision include communities local and
international -- education in Indiana, the state and its economy,
the nation and its health, and the international exchange of ideas
and development of community.

Open-source software powers top US academic supercomputer
Indiana University’s supercomputer, Big Red, is the fastest
supercomputer among all US academic institutions and the 23rd fastest
supercomputer in the world, according to a list, released today,
of the world's most powerful computer systems.
To achieve the greatest parallel processing efficiency, IU will be
using the OpenMPI implementation of the Message Passing Interface (MPI)
specification. OpenMPI was created by an international consortium of
several major research labs including the
Open Systems Lab, part of Pervasive
Technology Labs at Indiana University. OpenMPI provides especially
advanced tools for taking advantage of and effectively utilizing a
complex supercomputer cluster such as Big Red.

Advanced Network Management Lab researchers describe potential
consequences for young people who post personal information on
online "blogs" and social networking websites
In an interview recorded at a demonstration given to students and
teachers attending the 2006 Intel International Science and Engineering
Fair and aired on Indiana NPR stations, ANML's Edward Balas and Mark
Meiss explained that employers now routinely use information found
online to evaluate a job-seeker’s character. They warned that
individuals can not easily "take back" information once it
has been put on the Internet and they encouraged young people to think
carefully about unintended consequences before posting personal
information on websites. (Audio not available for rebroadcast or
