Mission

Some of the Pervasive Technology Labs are focused on developing core technologies. Others concentrate on the targeted, in-depth application and integration of core technologies to address important real-world needs. Among the latter group is the Knowledge Acquisition and Projection Lab (KAPLab), the first externally funded lab affiliated with Pervasive Technology Labs.

The mission of the Knowledge Acquisition and Projection Lab is to develop new insights about how knowledge is created, managed and used within organizations, and then based on this knowledge create advanced information technology systems that will create new possibilities for management, delivery, and use of institutional knowledge.

The KAPLab is working to understand how knowledge is created, managed and used, from initial acquisition of data, conversion to organizationally significant information, through to the articulation of information into knowledge.  The lab is also looking at how advanced communication and information technologies can be leveraged to help organizations acquire, manage and bring knowledge to bear as needed to solve their problems.

Some application domains the lab is working in include:

  • Creating tools to enhance problem solving in distributed and virtual organizations
  • Knowledge management for innovation in virtual organizations
  • Computational modelling of organizations as a basis for understanding the impact of virtualisation and collaboration technologies
  • Information management to knowledge management in sensor networks
  • Making instruments, sensors and other devices which provide primary data smarter and easier to use
