May 2006 - The lab conducted an initial study to develop a model of international scientific collaboration and interagency cooperation between Turkey and the US. Dr. McMullen and Dr. Evans (Virginia Tech) traveled to Turkey to conduc
t an initial study with officials at TUBITAK, theTurkish national science research organization, and with researchers at seven major research universities, three trade organizations, and two companies. The initial study will be used to develop a model for international scientific collaboration. This model will be used to understand how international scientific collaborations are formed and operate, what their critical success factors are, how funding organizations coordinate priorities to support them, and what possible knowledge management interventions would improve coordination between cognate funding agencies in different countries to achieve shared goals in basic science research.
April 2006 - Dr. Jaesoon An joins the KAPLab.
We are pleased to announce that Dr. Jaesoon An has joined the Knowledge Acquisition and Projection Lab. Before joining the lab, Dr. An was a senior researcher at Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) and researched the area of service/interface design for ubiquitous computing technologies and other interactive technologies used in electronic devices. Prior to joining Samsung, she had been associated with Microsoft Corporation as both an intern and a full-time employee.
Dr. An's current research focuses on the facilitation of knowledge acquisition for learning and performance improvement. By designing and developing training simulations, web-based learning spaces, or mobile learning applications embedded with instrumented software that monitors and understands user activities, she hopes to help learners and educators to achieve their learning and instruction goals.
March 2006 - The KAPLab participated in the first joint coral reef and lakes ecological observation meeting, held in Townsville, Australia. The meeting highlighed efforts by the two groups to understand requirements for ecological observation in both domains and to develop a set of reusable sensing technologies, data manag
ement processes and data formats.
March 2006 - Dr. McMullen participated in PRAGMA-10, a meeting of the Pacific Rim Applications and Grid Middleware Assembly (http://www.pragma-grid.net) held in Townsville, Australia. Dr. McMullen is a PRAGMA Steering Committee member and a participant in the PRAGMA Telescience Working Group.
