ISO C++ Standards Committee Convenes at IU

IU’s Open Systems Lab, part of Indiana University Pervasive Technology Institute, and Roundhouse Consulting, Ltd. of Bloomington co-hosted the ISO C++ Standards Committee meeting from August 15 – 19.
The committee meets two to three times a year to plan new features for C++, one of the most popular programming languages in the world and a key component of systems such as Microsoft Windows, application software, device drivers, embedded software, and video games.
Dr. Andrew Lumsdaine, director of IU’s Open Systems Lab, said, “Our researchers are deeply involved in the development and improvement of C++ and its design, primarily because of our interests in high performance computing and enabling more productive computing and software development. It is a pleasure for us to host our colleagues in this endeavor.”
The committee brings together representatives from around the world. These participants share insights from institutions and companies such as Apple, Bloomberg, IBM, Microsoft, Google, Texas A&M University, IU, and consulting and software development companies such as Roundhouse Consulting, Dinkumware, and Gimpel Software. Building on these perspectives, they collaboratively develop future versions of C++ and review issues, features, and proposals submitted by the community of C++ programmers.
The new standard includes many additions to the core language and extends the C++ standard library, incorporating most of the newest C++ library extensions. For more about C++ and the ISO C++ Standards Committee, see: http://www.open-std.org/jtc1/sc22/wg21/.
